Our Story
1990 was an historic year, but most notably, it marked the beginning of a new South Africa with the release of Nelson Mandela.
The breathtaking changes unfolding in South Africa led British businessman, Ian Kilbride, to give up his stockbroking career and embark on a lifetimes journey driving the length of the African continent, arriving in wonderous Cape Town in 1990. It was from Cape Town that Ian established the successful Spirit Invest Group alongside the Spirit Foundation.
With deep roots in the terroir, people and community of Bonnievale, 1990 wine and country estate bears testament to renaissance of a new, hopeful and vital South Africa. More than a boutique winery, the 1990 wine and country estate embraces craftsmanship, community and development blended into one.
While our wines are carefully and caringly crafted for pure excellence, our mission is to produce exquisite wines, while making a significant contribution the wider Bonnievale community through supporting the Spirit Foundation. At 1990, we are proud to support the Foundation’s unique work in its two Early Childhood Development Centres and local sports development organisations.
